In 2005, SEIU joined with six other unions — the Teamsters, UNITE-HERE, Food and Commercial Workers, Carpenters, Laborers, and Farm Workers — to form Change to Win, a new labor federation representing six million workers focused on uniting workers in some 50 million jobs that can’t be moved overseas.

  • Since Change to Win was formed, every union in the federation has made major changes to devote more resources to organizing to unite more workers for greater strength and is working through the CTW Strategic Organizing Center on major joint campaigns to improve pay, benefits, and working conditions in industries with some of the lowest-paid workers in the nation.

  • According to a New York Times editorial in February 2008, the increase in the percentage of workers in unions in 2007 in the face of aggressive employer opposition "offers hope that the renewed emphasis on organizing by some of the nation's largest unions — like the service employees' union, the Teamsters and others that split off from the AFL-CIO to form the Change to Win Coalition — might start paying dividends despite the difficult odds.
