Success a Result of Hard Choices – Decisions on Strategy, Structure, Priorities
SEIU local union delegates to the past three SEIU
Conventions in 1996, 2000, and 2004 voted to approve a series of changes in
strategy, priorities, and structure in order to increase the union’s ability to
build a strong and effective voice for working people.
Increased Focus and Resources
1996: The International Union raised spending on
organizing from 20 percent to 50 percent and by 1999 many locals had increased organizing
spending from an average of less than 5 percent to at least 20 percent.
2000: SEIU locals adopted the New Strength Unity Plan
that dramatically increased resources from members for local unions and created
pooled funds for major breakthrough strategies.
Increased Unity and Accountability
Since 1998: Elected local union leaders have increasing
worked together as the collective leadership responsible for a national
strategy to unite and improve the lives of workers in their industry and ensure
quality services for communities.
2004: Convention delegates increased
accountability and coordination within the SEIU divisions that are made up of
local unions in each industry.
