Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
At our 2008 Convention, SEIU members face
historic decisions
that will have a major impact on our families, our communities, and all working people. By working together, SEIU members have built
the most successful workers’ organization
of our time and the leading advocacy group in North America.
Now, we have a
once-in-a-lifetime chance
to win…
•
Affordable, quality healthcare
for all.
•
Quality services
in our workplaces and our communities, with fair and reliable funding.
•
An economy that rewards work
, not just a few at the top.
•
The freedom to form a union
for all working people.
•
A clear path to citizenship
for hard-working, taxpaying immigrants.
But first we must answer some
vital questions
:
• Will we rest on our laurels, or will we help the millions of SEIU members and other working people who still lack what they need to achieve a better future?
• Can SEIU members maintain and improve what we have if nearly ninety percent of working people have no union and increasingly are losing affordable health care and retirement benefits?
Can we really win “Justice” if it is for “Just Us”?
• Can we maintain the
unity
that has allowed us to accomplish so much in the past 12 years?
• As we grow bigger and stronger, can we continue to build a
more responsive
union in which members lead, participate, and decide?
With these questions in mind, hundreds of
SEIU members and elected local union leaders
have been involved in preparing recommendations to the 2008 convention for how we can be stronger and more united to
change workers’ lives
.
Together, we have shown that when we are bold and united, we can not only win
justice
for ourselves but
pass it on
to our children and grandchildren and to all working people. That is our challenge and our mission.
The choice is ours.
