The Weekend Report


From Friday to Sunday, SEIU member delegates met, debated andvoted in Division Leadership Assemblies and Convention Committees onissues, strategies and proposals under consideration at the SEIU 2008Convention.

The following is a summary of the outcomes of the votes.

Healthcare Division

TheSEIU Healthcare Division Leadership Assembly – 1,200 healthcare memberdelegates representing 1.1 million SEIU Healthcare members – debatedfor 8 hours Saturday and voted to set their agenda for the next fouryears. 
  • PASSED: To unite 350,000 workers in SEIU Healthcare in the next four years.
  • PASSED: To create nationwide bargaining councils within both the hospital and nursing home industries.
  • PASSED: To pool collective resources to bring unorganized healthcare workers into the union and build members’ strength.
  • PASSED: To support a vision of uniting long term care workers within each state. 


Property Services Division

Morethan 300 Property Services delegates, representing more than 250,000property services members, voted to set their agenda for the next fouryears.

  • PASSED: To approve a plan to unite with 250,000 new security officers, food service workers, janitors in the next four years.


Public Services Division

Morethan 1,000 Public Services delegates – representing more than 1 millionpublic services members -- voted to set their agenda for the next fouryears. 

  • PASSED: To unite 300,000 more publicservices workers in SEIU for greater strength to win strong contractsand improve quality public services over the next four years.
