SEIU's "Justice For All" Media Packet

SEIU members have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity this convention. With broad public agreement that our society is out of balance and with the election this year of a new U.S. president and Congress, we have a chance to take huge steps forward toward justice for all working people.

The SEIU International Executive Board recently adopted the Justice for All recommendations (full text) for the SEIU 2008 Convention. The Board includes 57 local union leaders whose locals make up 87% of the SEIU membership.

These recommendations (summary) are the culmination of several years of analysis, debate, discussion by thousands of members, stewards, activists, and elected leaders and are among the most far-reaching and innovative proposals ever considered by a U.S. union.

Building on Successes. SEIU members have shown over the last four years we can win more for working families when we work together, democratically developing joint strategies and holding each other accountable to carry out our plans.

Challenges ahead. 50 percent of workers would choose to have a union if they didn’t face employer opposition. That’s at least 40 million who don’t have one now. But taking advantage of this opportunity to strengthen all working people requires overcoming some stark realities...

Proposed strategy for 2008-2012. Key highlights of proposed recommendations to the SEIU 2008 Convention. They are based upon research and input from thousands of SEIU members and elected local union leaders.
